Welcome to Acting Class

By Rev. Sally Johnson.

Several months ago I had an idea. What would happen if people would choose to read the Bible together - not in a group that meets at church but online? This weekly reflection on the Book of Acts is an invitation to take a few minutes out of your week to read scripture, pray and perhaps add to an on-going online conversation.

Week 10 - Acts 28:23-24, 30-31

ACTING CLASS WEEK TEN

We have come to the final week of our study of the Acts of the Apostles. The scriptures read over the last ten weeks are only the tip of the iceberg of this amazing story of the early followers of the Way of Jesus. Paul’s commitment to telling the good news of God continues and is fused with the story of Christians today. There really is no ‘ending’ to this story because as each follower of Jesus lives out their life of faith, they continue the story began in these scriptures. This week’s reflection will be on some of the final verses in the 28th chapter. Paul continues his teaching and preaching, still under house arrest but supporting himself. The acts of the apostles has been spread from Jerusalem to Rome and beyond.

Take some time to read the following scripture slowly, listening for the word or phrase that seems to nudge or speak to you. Spend some time in prayer with the word or phrase, inviting God to illuminate how it might help you on your spiritual journey. You might jot down thoughts that come to you. Read the scripture again and listen for the how the words and meanings may have shifted or changed for you.

ACTS 28:23-24, 30-31
After they had set a day to meet with him(Paul), they came to him at his lodgings in great numbers. From morning to evening he explained the matter to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets. Some were convinced by what he said, while others refused to believe. He lived there two whole years at his own expense, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

Some questions to consider……

  • How might Paul have   tried to convince the people? How might you?
  • Have you ever been   in a situation where ‘believing’ was not possible?
  • How did Paul’s   boldness serve him well? When did it hinder him?
  • How has your boldness   served you well and when has it been a hindrance?

Please take a moment to post any reflections or thoughts you would like to share with others….whether bold or humble; your thoughts are often an illumination for another.
